Hotel reception bar and restaurant really nicely decorated. Only issue is that makes you think the rooms will be the same. They aren’t!! Outdated, artex walls dirty carpet. Very very basic fixtures and the room smelt of sewage. I was there one night otherwise I would have moved. 4 star reception but a 1 star room at best. We ate at hotel and there was only us in restaurant. Menu basic. I chose the fish and chips and when it arrived the whole meal looked like it was from Iceland. I’m not being negative about Iceland but when you eat in a 4 star hotel you expect better. Fish fillet was full of bones. I went to bed starving!! Breakfast was okay. Some things like hash browns had been left under lamps too long. We had a conference there and lunch was okay. I travel a lot but wouldn’t stay here again

Unfriendly staff, dusty rooms and a pool too hot to use

Unhygienic and maintenance issues in the rooms

We recently stayed at this hotel and booked two rooms. Unfortunately, our experience was disappointing due to cleanliness and maintenance issues. In the first room, the shower was dirty, the TV was broken, and the sofa bed had clearly not been cleaned—there were crumbs, hairs, and used bedding still on it. In the second room, the mini fridge was filthy, the sink was blocked, and shockingly, a pair of boxer shorts had been left on a chair. On the positive side, the location was decent, and the staff at reception and in the bar were lovely. However, when we reported the issues, including the unhygienic state of the rooms and the abandoned clothing, nothing was done to address them. We expected much better standards of cleanliness and service, and sadly, this experience fell far short.

Overall fine and good location

Great location for the station / city centre and Hallam Uni. Stayed one night for work at the university. The bar area is modern as is the entrance area, unfortunately I felt the room itself was a bit tired / dated. (Maybe it was the anaglypta wall paper?!) The room was very clean, so no complaint really but just something a bit dated about it compared to downstairs. My sink did have a smell, but that seemed because part of the fixing for the plug was missing. I found the shower cubicle quite small - fine for me, but for a larger built person it might have been a bit tight. And I didn’t like the toilet being separate. Had a meal in the bar, standard was good as expected and staff were friendly. Breakfast was usual hotel selection of hot and cold - good choice. Overall a fine hotel stay, but I didn’t think quite up to standard of another Novotel I’ve used before.
