Tips to Combat Loneliness When Working Away from Home

When you’re working away from home, it’s easy to feel disconnected. Long periods of time spent far away from loved ones can be tough, especially in the evenings, when you’d usually be enjoying dinner and relaxation with your kids, partner, or friends. 

If you find yourself travelling for work regularly and it’s starting to get you down, there are several things you can do to take matters back into your own hands and combat loneliness once and for all. 

1. Reach out to your connections
Whether you reach out through LinkedIn or social media, or simply chat to the people you’re in work or meetings with, suggest a casual drink or a bite to eat at the end of the day and see how much it can transform your time away. You’ll be surprised by how quickly you can find a companion, particularly if your connections are also away from home. 

Something as simple as enjoying a drink and a chat at the end of the day can improve your business travel experience immeasurably and help to combat loneliness. Try to steer the conversation away from the business to allow yourself a little of the work-life balance that you can miss out on when you’re travelling. 
2. Speak to home
If all you feel like doing at the end of a busy day is relaxing with your family or friends back home, there’s no reason you can’t. Connect to your hotel’s WiFi and use Skype or FaceTime to see the faces you’re missing the most. Try watching a film or show together over videocall.
