Sharjah Expo Centre Events You Never Knew You Needed

Sharjah Expo Centre events promise great cultural experiences year-round, and Novotel Sharjah Expo Centre puts you right in the heart of it all.

Plan your trip to Sharjah

Not many people who travel to the United Arab Emirates – or even some of us who’ve lived there – realise that Sharjah is a rising star on the UAE’s cultural calendar, thanks to an impressive line-up of Sharjah Expo Centre events.

From humble beginnings in pearl diving and fishing to a vibrant hub of books and modern art, Sharjah’s evolution happened quietly. Many locals take pride in the fact that their city stands apart by not trying to be glitzy like its sister emirate, Dubai, which is just a 20-minute drive away.

Sharjah has quickly become a dynamic stage for cultural happenings, from the Sharjah International Book Fair to the Sharjah Biennial – not to mention some seriously fragrant experiences like the Emirates Perfumes and Oud Exhibition.

If you’re planning to visit, make sure to base yourself at Novotel Sharjah Expo Centre. Located right next to the venue, the hotel is perfectly placed for catching major Sharjah Expo Centre events without needing to call an Uber or taxi.

Novotel has comfortable, modern rooms, calming views of Al Khan Lagoon, and convenient onsite restaurants. All absolutely ideal for kicking back after a packed day of exhibitions or cultural deep dives. It also has sleek meeting rooms for those here on business.

This unassuming city may not always seek the spotlight, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t shine. We’ve put together a list of some of the best cultural gigs – including the Sharjah Biennial, Ramadan NIghts, and other standout Sharjah Expo Centre events.

Get ready to find out why this city deserves a top spot on your culture map.

Sharjah Biennial: For the artists and art aficionados

This one’s for the artists, the art lovers, and anyone who simply gets satisfaction from a beautifully curated space (like we do). The Sharjah Biennial turns the city into one giant gallery, showcasing bold, thought-provoking work from some of the most talented contemporary artists in the region and beyond. Part of the magic unfolds at the Sharjah Expo Centre, where exhibitions, art installations, and performances come together to create just one part of the Sharjah Biennial.

Brought to you by the Sharjah Art Foundation, the Sharjah Biennial is all about sparking creative conversations and celebrating artistic expression, whether that’s through music, film, or live performances. Since its first edition in 1993, it has transformed everyday corners of Sharjah into unexpected stages for large-scale public art.

It happens every two years, and when it does, it’s a must-see. Keep an eye on the Visit Sharjah website for dates and details.

Sharjah International Book Fair: One of the world’s largest literary events

If you get excited by books like we do – and we’re talking real, hold-them-in-your-hands books – you will absolutely love the Sharjah International Book Fair.

For book lovers, this event is the highlight of the year. It takes place every November at the Expo Centre, and what could be more perfect than stocking up on some great reads for the cosy winter months?

The Sharjah International Book Fair also hosts thousands of publishers, authors, and readers to connect and celebrate knowledge and ideas. It’s a great opportunity to meet your favourite international authors, discover Arabic and regional literature, and also attend potential book signings.

Emirates Perfumes & Oud Exhibition: Smell your way through the Gulf's rich perfume heritage

When we say Emirates Perfumes & Oud Exhibition, we mean the good stuff – and we’re not just talking about the big international names (though you'll spot a few of those too). The real stars of the show are often the locally crafted, luxurious scents from regional favourites like Arabian Oud, Atyab El Sheekh, and more.

Many of these local and regional perfumers have made a name for themselves across the world, particularly in Europe and Asia, where they’ve opened boutiques and even landed spots in big-name outlets like Douglas, Primark, and others.

Held annually at Sharjah Expo Centre, the Emirates Perfumes & Oud Exhibition is a sensorial journey into the region’s rich, fragrant tradition. The event showcases oud, musk, and Arabian perfume blends that capture the essence of Emirati identity and luxury. It’s an ideal stop for perfume connoisseurs who can tell their earthy, woody scents from floral bergamot.

It’s also a great place to shop for gifts or souvenirs!

Ramadan Nights: Culture, cuisine, and community

This one is probably a favourite amongst locals and visitors alike. During the Islamic holy month, the annual Ramadan Nights event at Sharjah Expo Centre comes alive with festive charm.

For Muslims observing Ramadan, the days are spent fasting from dawn to sunset, with evenings centred around iftar (breaking the fast), prayer, and gathering with family or community.

But for solo expats or practising Muslims living away from family, especially in fast-paced cities like Dubai, the holy month can sometimes feel isolating.

Sharjah, on the other hand, offers a more grounded and culturally aware experience for those looking to celebrate and also connect in the spirit of community. Ramadan Nights bring that family vibe to life, combining traditional food and a vibrant night market filled with artisanal goods and regional treats.

There are also two mosques nearby for those who are observing nightly prayers during Ramadan. Al Noor Mosque, which is one of the well-known mosques in Sharjah, has stunning Turkish Ottoman-style architecture, complete with domes and twin minarets. It’s a 10-minute cab ride from the Sharjah Expo Centre. Masjid Al Johar is another nearby option, and it's just a 5-minute cab ride from the expo centre.

All in all, for those looking to experience an authentic atmosphere of Ramadan in the UAE, Ramadan Nights offers a window into local life – one that’s unique to Sharjah.

The Perfect Glow-up: Sharjah Light Festival

The Sharjah Light Festival is absolutely worth checking out, even though it's not exactly on the list of Sharjah Expo Centre events. It usually takes place in February, transforming the city into a glowing canvas of art.

One of the standout participants is the beautiful Al Noor Mosque, which looks even more majestic reflected in the still waters of Khalid Lagoon, with the shimmering Arabian Gulf just beyond. During the festival, the mosque lights up in breathtaking fashion, its intricate Ottoman-style architecture illuminated in colour and motion.

With specially curated light shows and installations, the entire emirate glows in living colour. Make sure to bring a camera. You’ll want to remember this stunning show.

How to make the most of Sharjah’s Expo Centre Events

Sharjah is more low-key and culturally grounded than neighbouring Dubai, so dressing modestly will help you blend in, especially when visiting mosques or attending cultural events during Ramadan.

For women, loose, modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees is ideal, and it’s a good idea to carry a scarf for mosque visits. Men should opt for modest, loose-fitting clothes as well – think long pants and shirts with sleeves. When entering the mosque, make sure to observe prayer hours and remove your shoes.

To stay up-to-date on event schedules and ticketing, head to the Visit Sharjah website, and consider booking tickets in advance when needed.

Whether you’re attending the Sharjah Biennial, exploring the Emirates Perfume and Oud Exhibition, or losing yourself in books at the Sharjah International Book Fair, these Sharjah Expo Centre events are perfect for cultural travellers coming from near or far.

With year-round events and easy access from Novotel Sharjah Expo Centre, there’s always something soul-enriching happening in this emirate.

Enjoy the change of pace and unique rhythm in Sharjah!
