Things To Do in Manama: The Family Getaway You Didn’t Know You Needed

Planning a trip to Bahrain? Here are the best things to do in Manama. From visiting majestic mosques to an underwater zoo – this Gulf city will surprise you.

Plan your trip to Bahrain

Picture this: You pull off the highway just outside Manama, drawn by a cluster of parked cars and the promise of strong karak, or chai. Locals are gathered at plastic tables and sitting on lawn chairs, the air is warm with cardamom and conversation. Later that same afternoon, you're inside a sleek, air-conditioned aquarium, watching jellyfish drift past neon lights.

This coastal capital is the kind of city that sneaks up on you - in the best way. With its blend of historical souqs, modern malls, and layers of culture, there's no shortage of things to do in Manama.

If you’re coming from neighbouring cities like Riyadh or Dubai, the city is especially inviting because it offers a change of pace. It's also far more affordable to explore than its glitzier Gulf neighbours, while still delivering the warm hospitality and luxe touches the region is known for.

Over the years, the city has quietly grown into a regional hub, packed every weekend with families and friends from Saudi Arabia and beyond who come for a laid-back atmosphere and to enjoy the many things to do in Manama. Compact and super easy to navigate, it’s ideal for a weekend break.

When you're in town, there’s no better base than Novotel Bahrain Al Dana Resort, especially if you're travelling with the family. This beachfront getaway ticks all the right boxes: a private beach and outdoor pool, spacious rooms (plus connecting options) for comfort and convenience, and a kids' club that lets little ones burn off energy while grown-ups enjoy some downtime at the spa.

It's also just minutes away from some of the best things to do in Manama, like the Bahrain National Museum and the Bab el-Bahrain Souq. Add onsite dining, Gulf views, and warm hospitality, and you’ve got a perfect stay.

From paddleboarding on the beach to wandering the Manama Souq for sweets and spices, this city will grow on you. You might also discover a love for freshly fried falafel, and if you have kids, they won’t roll their eyes at a morning well spent at the Marassi Aquarium - which, let’s be honest, is a win for any parent.

Without further ado, here’s your carefully curated list of things to do in Manama for the perfect family weekend. Enjoy!

Day 1: Cultural things to do in Manama

Morning: Mosques & Museums

One of your first cultural stops should be the Al-Fateh Grand Mosque, a monumental site and architectural icon that ranks amongst the world’s largest. Free guided tours are available and offer a warm introduction to Islamic practices, which are deeply intertwined with Bahraini culture. Be sure to ask at the mosque about these tours in advance.

Remember: prayer times are important here, but the actual prayers don’t last very long - usually around 5 to 10 minutes. It’s best to arrive before or after prayer. Friday is the day of congregational prayers, so it’s best to visit on any other day of the week - unless, of course, you plan to join prayers too. When visiting, modest dress is required. Long, loose-fitting clothing that covers shoulders and knees is recommended, and women and girls should bring a scarf to cover their hair.

Once you're ready, step inside the beautifully carpeted mosque to marvel at its soaring domes, marble floors, and intricate Quranic calligraphy – which isn't just for show – it encourages spiritual reflection and connection with God (Allah).

Next, make your way to the Bahrain National Museum, which brings history to life with exhibits on the ancient Dilmun civilisation, traditional Bahraini life, and even a few dinosaur displays. With interactive features and hands-on experiences, it's one of the most engaging things to do in Manama for both young visitors and adults.

Afternoon: Souqs & Snacks

Wander south from Bab el-Bahrain, and you’ll find yourself in the heart of Manama Souq, a labyrinth of narrow alleyways and vibrant storefronts that feel like stepping back in time. This Arabian-style market is for those of us who enjoy stumbling upon hidden local treasures. You’ll come across everything from traditional thobes and spices, to souvenirs and even 21-karat gold jewellery. Plus, the atmosphere is lively and full of character.

Bargaining is expected and part of the fun, so don’t be shy. It’s completely normal to ask for a better price and enjoy a bit of friendly negotiation with shopkeepers. A simple “shukran” (thank you) and “kam al-thaman?” (how much?) go a long way in showing politeness and building rapport with shopkeepers.

When you’re ready for a break, grab a fresh juice or a sandwich from one of the nearby cafés or food stands.

Evening: Beachfront things to do in Manama

After a great day out, head back to Novotel Bahrain Al Dana Resort and catch the sunset from the private beach while the kids splash around in the pool. With warm weather nearly all year round, a dip in the sea or pool is always a good idea.

For dinner, enjoy fresh fish or choose from a selection of local fusion dishes at the onsite seafood restaurant. Vegan and vegetarian options are also available.

Day 2: Outdoor and aquatic fun

Morning: Marassi Magic

Make sure you check out the captivating world of the Marassi Aquarium & Underwater Zoo. We know what you're probably thinking - it’s not just fun for the young ones; adults will find themselves equally engaged, whether enjoying a moment of calm at the Tree Top Café or marvelling at the intricate ecosystems on display. The Marassi Aquarium offers a thoughtful blend of education and immersion, so you’ll learn something on the spot.

Afternoon: Wildlife or Windsurfing

For your second afternoon in Manama, you have a few great options: try paddleboarding, kitesurfing or windsurfing at a local beach club, or take a short 30-minute drive to Al Areen Wildlife Sanctuary. At the sanctuary, you can see an amazing variety of animals in their natural habitat, making for a memorable wildlife experience. Whichever you choose, both offer plenty of fun, and for parents who prefer to relax, there are shaded seating areas to chill out after exploring the incredible wildlife.

Evening: Arts & Eats in Juffair Square

Step into Juffair Square, where Manama shows off its modern, creative side. Think of it as Bahrain’s answer to Dubai’s City Walk: stylish, social, and built for wandering. Manama is an up-and-coming city, and it shows. Most buildings are new and sleek, not because of design trends but because the city itself – like most in the Gulf – is still growing. Just lean into the contrast and embrace the unique atmosphere.

Juffair Square really comes alive in the evenings, with live music in the open air, locals and visitors mingling in quirky cafés, and art galleries tucked between polished storefronts. The atmosphere is fun, vibrant, and effortlessly cool.

Remember that falafel we said you might fall in love with? Well, it's just around the corner. Gather the family for dinner at Zaroob, where traditional regional dishes get a fresh, modern twist. There's no better way to end your night - on a flavourful note. Make sure to try the hummus!

Practical tips to spend a weekend like a local in Manama

From the hospitality of locals to the rich mix of souqs, galleries, and cafés, Manama is a place that rewards curiosity and open-minded travel.

Just remember a few essentials: the best time to visit is from November to April, when the weather is pleasant in the Gulf Arab states and more comfortable for exploring.

Ride-hailing apps like Uber and Careem make getting around easy, though walk-able areas like the souq and Juffair are great on foot.

Bahrain is a predominantly Muslim country, so modest dress is expected, especially in religious sites - it’s always a good idea to be mindful of local customs.

English is widely spoken, and the local currency is the Bahraini dinar (BHD), which you can exchange at airports, malls, or local money changers.

With a little planning and a spirit of discovery, Manama is ready to welcome you. Happy travels!
