Last-minute summer activities planner: family days that beat the heat

Enjoy stress-free days in the sun with our family summer activities guide – packed with easy, last-minute ideas that keep everyone active, entertained and cool when the holiday heat is on.

Plan your family holiday now

Summer inspires visions of carefree adventure – but when you’re travelling with family (and the sun’s blazing overhead), that dream can quickly turn into chaos. If you’ve ever found yourself Googling “indoor things to do with kids” while your youngest is mid-meltdown, you’re not alone.

The good news? You don’t need months of planning to enjoy a fun family day out. With just a little structure and a flexible mindset, you can build the perfect spontaneous summer routine – one that’s full of outdoor adventure, al fresco picnics and air-conditioned escapes that keep everyone engaged and refreshed. Whether you’re on a last-minute getaway, a city staycation or passing through on a family holiday, here’s how to make summer days memorable – for all the right reasons.

Why summer activities routines matter for families

Spending time outdoors is part of the joy of summer, but high temperatures and strong sun can quickly derail even the best-laid plans – especially for young children. That’s why the most successful travel days follow a simple rhythm: get moving in the morning, relax in the afternoon and explore gently in the evening. This approach gives you the best of both worlds: energy-burning activities when it’s cool outside and relaxed indoor downtime during the hottest part of the day. It’s also a great way to get more out of your destination and discover family-friendly spaces.

“The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.” – Marcel Proust

Start early: parks, playgrounds and easy adventures

Most kids wake up early and have lots of energy in the mornings. This is also when cities are at their most peaceful, making it a great time for outdoor family activities like park plays, nature walks or casual sightseeing.

In Paris, the Jardin du Luxembourg is popular with local families. Shady paths, a traditional carousel and vintage sailing boats make it a perennial favourite. It’s just a short hop from Novotel Paris Centre Gare Montparnasse, making it easy to start your day without a complex plan.

Over in Amsterdam, Vondelpark is ideal for cycling (rentals are often available through your hotel) or a laid-back picnic under the trees. You might catch a street performer or stumble across an impromptu open-air theatre rehearsal in summer.

In Rome, consider an early visit to the Villa Borghese Gardens, where you’ll find pedal carts, shaded walkways and even a small lake for rowboats – it’s the perfect place to burn off that early morning energy.

Travel tip: Pack a light breakfast – fruit, pastries and juice – and combine your morning activity with a mini picnic. It’s an easy way to keep things fun and flexible, especially if you’re working with limited time or budget.

Afternoon cool-downs: museums, aquariums and indoor activities

Once the midday heat rolls in, it’s time to head indoors. A great summer travel routine for families includes at least one cool, calm space where kids can rest, recharge and still be entertained.

Family-friendly museums are more interactive than ever. In Barcelona, CosmoCaixa offers hands-on science exhibits and a rainforest under glass. Over in Vienna, ZOOM Children’s Museum is part of the MuseumsQuartier and includes a “motion lab” for young explorers. If you’re visiting Berlin, the Labyrinth Kindermuseum mixes education and play with puzzles, games and toys.

Aquariums are another excellent option. SEA LIFE has locations across Europe, including Munich, London and Porto, with exhibits ranging from shark tunnels to touch tanks. The air conditioning is a welcome bonus.

Refuel and recharge: ice cream, cafés and rooftop breaks

By late afternoon, your crew will likely be ready for a rest. Instead of packing in more energetic summer activities, look for a calm, shady place to refuel – preferably involving something sweet to rehydrate and restock energy levels.

Gelateria dei Neri in Florence is a favourite with both locals and visitors. In Lisbon, try Santini, an ice cream institution with fruity, refreshing flavours perfect for hot days. And in Vienna, Eis-Greissler offers delicious organic scoops made with local ingredients.

If you’re in a city with hills or water views, it’s worth seeking out a rooftop café or open-air bar where you can relax while the kids draw, snack or journal about the day. At Novotel Nice Centre Vieux Nice the rooftop pool is an ideal spot for cooling off and unwinding. Parents might even enjoy a refreshing cocktail while planning the evening ahead.

Evening exploration: low-key fun after sundown

As the sun starts to dip, energy often returns and the city streets come alive. This is the time for relaxed sightseeing, sunset strolls and gentle summer activities.

In many Mediterranean cities, evenings bring out the best in local culture. Nice hosts the Cours Saleya market, where you can sample olives and cheeses, and discover a range of artisanal crafts including jewellery, pottery, paintings and leather goods. Barcelona’s Gràcia Festival in August turns the neighbourhood into a fantasy land of decorated streets and music. Even smaller cities like Ljubljana put on summer events, from jazz nights to evening riverside markets.

A post-dinner excursion or gentle cruise can be the perfect end to the day. Consider a Seine riverboat ride in Paris, a Danube evening cruise in Vienna or simply strolling along the canals in Amsterdam with a cone in hand.

Travel tip: Check city calendars for open-air theatre shows or local performances. In Stratford-upon-Avon, catch a family-friendly Shakespeare performance in the park. In Berlin, the Freiluftkino Kreuzberg offers nightly films under the stars (with blankets provided!).

Tips for last-minute summer family travel

How do you plan spontaneous summer activities while travelling? Here are a few final tips to help you glide through your summer days:

- Use local transport apps (like Citymapper or Google Maps) to avoid getting lost and too much walking in the heat.

- Pack cooling towels, refillable water bottles, SPF and hats, no matter your destination.

- Avoid sugar crashes by balancing local treats like ice cream with plenty of healthy snacks

- Choose accommodation with family-friendly amenities, such as connected rooms, play spaces and early check-in.

Summer activities, simplified

Whether you’re travelling through Europe’s cultural capitals or staying close to home, there’s something magical about discovering a city with fresh eyes and an open plan. From chasing pigeons in a leafy park to the wide-eyed joy of choosing from dozens of gelato flavours, it’s often the small spontaneous moments that forge the fondest memories.

So go ahead: plan loosely, pace gently and follow the rhythm of the day. Where will your next family adventure take you?

  • Active Sitting: Vital Exercise for Business Travellers

Active sitting introduces continuous movement through posture variation and micro-mobility habits. Performing these easy exercises helps promote blood circulation, encourage spinal alignment, reduce stiffness during travel and improve focus while working.   Neck rolls: Lower your chin to your chest and roll your head in slow circles. Shoulder shrugs: Raise your shoulders to your ears, hold for a few seconds then roll them down. Arm stretches: Pull your shoulders back and stretch your arms above your head. Seated spinal twists: Gently twist your upper body to one side. Repeat on the other side. Thigh presses: Place your palms on the outside of your knees and push your knees against them for 10 seconds. Leg extensions: Lift one leg parallel to the floor, hold for a moment and lower. Repeat with the other leg. Calf raises: Alternate raising your heels and toes off the floor while sitting. Ankle rotations: Rotate your ankles in both directions.

  • 5 Sensory Ideas for Preschoolers: Building Brain Power on Vacation

Travel offers something that even the most thoughtfully designed home environment cannot entirely replicate: genuine novelty. New places force your preschooler’s young brain to engage actively rather than rely on established ideas and routines.  Hotels, in particular, are surprisingly rich sensory environments. The lobby fountain with its mesmerising sounds and lights. The different texture of hotel carpet underfoot. The firm weight of layered bedding. The unfamiliar sounds of a new city drifting through the window at night. The delicious smell of unfamiliar food at the breakfast buffet. Each of these small sensory encounters is an opportunity for your preschooler’s brain to notice, categorise and integrate new ideas and information.

  • Sensory Design: How the 5 Senses Influence Interior Architecture

Where once luxury in hotels would be measured by grand marble fittings or the square footage of your penthouse suite, today it is increasingly defined by emotional reaction. Sensory design is being used in hotels to evoke feelings, create precious memories for guests and – of course – shape brand identity and loyalty. Hotel guests often forget what they saw, but they remember how they felt, so the current era of hospitality design believes that light, scent, taste, sound and texture work together to create environments that comfort, inspire and calm the brain.  With more than 20 years of experience in hospitality design, Nicolas Capéran of London-based studio Takagicapéran has recently transformed Novotel London Bridge as well as Novotel York Centre using multi-sensory architecture and interior design elements. His goal? To translate the personality of each space – from lobby to bar, restaurant to guest room or spa – into a unique experience filled with discovery, surprise and emotion.

  • Morning Sun Benefits: 8 Easy Ways To Improve Your Holistic Health

Here at Novotel, we know that small actions repeated time and time again can have an enormous effect on mental and physical health. When staying in our hotels, follow these simple rules (then take them home with you) to garner maximum morning sun benefits:  Get direct exposure to sunlight within an hour of waking.  The optimum time for daylight exposure is between 8am and 10am when UV levels are low; after that there’s a high UV risk with the sun’s rays being stronger. Try for 10–20 minutes of natural light within an hour of waking. Aim for 10 minutes on sunny days and 15–20 minutes on overcast days. Start your day with a 10-minute tea break on your hotel balcony or terrace.  Take your morning exercise routine outside, either onto your balcony or into the hotel grounds for a sunrise walk. If you can’t go outside, sit by a sunlit window for a few minutes.   Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Eating outside in your hotel grounds maximises exposure to daylight. Go for a 10-minute morning walk before your busy work or sightseeing schedule takes over. If your meetings are not in your hotel, walk to the venue to up your exposure to daylight. Likewise, sightseers can walk to local attractions.

  • Healthy Travel: Biohack Your Hotel Stay with These Small Tweaks

Biohack your diet en route with a few strategic tricks that can make all the difference.     Hydration: Fluid intake must come first, especially when you're over-exposed to pressurised aircraft cabins and air-conditioned rooms. Adding powdered electrolytes or even a pinch of Himalayan sea salt to bottled water can help enhance rehydration.   Tactical snacking: What biohackers call "targeted nutrition" becomes essential with the disruption that travel brings to regular mealtimes and food sources. You can pack for this by bringing nutritious snacks: nuts, seeds, dried fruits and protein bars give you alternatives to the processed foods common to airports and in-flight service. Timing is everything: Your metabolism may be thrown by a shift of time zones and other travel-related stresses, but you can help it adjust with plenty of protein at breakfast (think eggs, Greek yoghurt, lean meats and so on). Book dinner as early as possible, to give your system a rest of three or four hours before bed. Stimulant management:  Both casual meals and business lunches can mean more, and stronger, measures of caffeine and alcohol than you might be used to. Try not to drink coffee after 2pm, and keep beer, wine and spirits to a minimum to ensure better sleep.

  • 5 Family Games To Enjoy When You Travel

As well as creating lasting memories and a feeling of family unity, playtime has a proven scientific purpose. But just how does it help in cognitive development? Here are six ways that family travel games promote family well-being and strong mental health. Unplugging from screen time: Games demand the undivided attention of all participants, getting the kids off their devices and allowing family members to focus on each other rather than technology. Communicating together: Games require face-to-face intergenerational interaction, encouraging conversation and ensuring that each generation is listening to the other – something that often gets overlooked in families. Appreciating each other: Games allow adults and children to interact as equals – you can and will all learn from each other, hopefully fostering a new sense of mutual respect and affection. Teaching good sportsmanship: Family games are a safe way for kids to learn about fair play and how to follow rules. They can also learn how to win and lose gracefully – a vital skill that transfers to real-life social or work situations. Encouraging teamwork: Co-operative games need players to work together, showing that teamwork achieves better outcomes. Developing negotiating skills: When, inevitably, disagreements over game rules or strategies surface, family members can learn to negotiate and resolve conflicts without getting frustrated.

  • Why South-East Bali is Perfect for a Family Holiday

South-East Bali offers plenty to explore beyond the resort.    The key is choosing a few experiences that match your pace, rather than trying to see everything.   Water parks and high energy days Around 30 minutes from Nusa Dua, Waterbom Bali is one of the easiest full-day outings for families. With waterslides, a lazy river and dedicated kids’ areas, it works across different age groups.   It is best approached as a single outing with breaks built in, rather than trying to combine it with other plans.   Beaches and snorkelling The beaches around Nusa Dua and Tanjung Benoa are some of the most accessible for children, with calmer waters that make it easier to swim and snorkel.   Short, local boat trips offer a simple way to explore just offshore without committing to a full-day excursion, which helps keep the day flexible.   Watersports and beachfront  activities Tanjung Benoa is known for its range of water-based activities, including banana boats, paddleboarding and glass-bottom boat rides.   These are easy to dip in and out of, making them well suited to shorter bursts of activity rather than full-day commitments.   Markets and local culture In South-East Bali, market-style experiences tend to be smaller and easier to navigate. Places like Bali Collection offer a mix of local boutiques, souvenirs and casual dining in a setting that is easy to explore with children.   For something slightly more local, short trips to areas like Sanur Night Market give a glimpse into everyday Bali, with street food and small stalls in a relaxed, accessible setting.   Coastal walks and easy outdoor time Places like the Sanur beachfront promenade offer an easy way to spend time outdoors, whether walking, cycling or stopping along the way.   Because everything runs along a connected coastline, you can shape the day as you go without needing to plan each stop in advance.   Cultural experiences that feel accessible Uluwatu Temple is one of the most accessible cultural sites from South-East Bali, set on a clifftop above the ocean and best visited at sunset.   Timing it later in the day makes it easier to include without disrupting the overall pace, especially when travelling with children.

Hungry children can access their food virtually instantly, so they won’t get restless or fractious. Kids are notoriously picky eaters. The choice on a buffet ensures they’ll find something they enjoy. The casual vibe of a buffet removes the need for formal dining etiquette, so families will relax and business travellers can network. You can choose your own portion sizes and dietary preferences. Buffets offer a budget-friendly set price for all-you-can-eat feasts.

  • Circadian Rhythms: 8 Ways To Keep Them Aligned While on the Move

Guided by darkness and light, your body’s 24-hour clock regulates sleeping and waking cycles. A healthy circadian rhythm involves regular and consistent sleep (between seven to nine hours per night for adults) to ensure that our bodies are operating to their best ability. Travel disrupts these cycles as familiar light-dark cycles change, which can lead to short-term sleep issues, fatigue, poor concentration and irritability – never a good thing, especially if you’re travelling with fractious children who are themselves disorientated and still on “home time”.

  • The Sleep Reset Playbook - how to sleep better in hotels

Establish a bedtime routine Stick to a familiar bedtime routine when you're travelling. Whether it's reading before bed, listening to a calming playlist, or practising meditation, it's important to keep up your regular routine while you're away. These activities signal your body to wind down, helping you sleep in hotels. You can also combine this with a morning ritual that gets you ready for the day. 38% of travellers start small when building new habits, [2] so even a few minutes of routine can make a big difference.   Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and heavy meals before bed Caffeine, alcohol and heavy meals disrupt sleep. To avoid disruption, finish meals at least two hours before bedtime, avoid drinking caffeine later in the day, and consider alcohol-free options. This helps achieve deeper rest and supports your sleeping schedule after travelling. It also helps when you start the day with Novotel's hearty breakfast to kickstart your metabolism for a busy day. Then finish the day with a caffeine-free herbal tea, like chamomile or peppermint, to promote relaxation.   Practice relaxation techniques Relaxation techniques help you unwind, especially after a busy day of travelling and exploring. You can try deep breathing exercises, such as the “4-7-8” method, box breathing, or belly breathing to help relax the body.   Limit screen time Working on screens or scrolling on social media acts as a stimulant, keeping your mind awake and alert. Blue light from devices also suppresses melatonin, a natural hormone that triggers sleepiness. To avoid sleep disruption, switch off screens an hour before bed.   Separate work from relaxation When you're travelling for business, it can be hard to balance your work demands with opportunities for relaxation, but it's important to set boundaries. To separate business from leisure, you could use Novotel’s workspaces and lounges for productivity, then transition to relaxation by changing clothes, dimming lights, and engaging in a relaxing activity.   Try the "321 bedtime rule" The “321 bedtime rule” is a science-backed routine that sums up many of our recommendations to improve your quality of sleep: 3 hours before bed: Avoid eating. 2 hours before bed: Stop working. 1 hour before bed: Switch off screens. This routine helps your body wind down naturally and is especially useful for business travellers balancing productivity and rest.

  • A Local's Guide to the Best Things to Do in Rotorua With Kids

This is where you have two excellent options for experiencing the geothermal and cultural heart of Rotorua: Te Puia and Whakarewarewa, The Living Māori Village.   For families with little ones, Te Puia is often the easier win for a comprehensive cultural and geothermal punch. Located in the Whakarewarewa Geothermal Valley, Te Puia is the home of the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute, where your kids get to see master carvers and weavers at work.   The main attraction, though, is the Pohutu Geyser. It’s the largest active geyser in the Southern Hemisphere, and unlike the timed show at Wai-O-Tapu, Pōhutu is unpredictable, erupting up to 20 times a day, sometimes reaching heights of 30 metres. There's nothing like a 30-minute, surprise-blast of boiling water to capture a kid's attention.   Alternatively, Whakarewarewa, The Living Māori Village (located just next door), offers a glimpse into how the Tūhourangi Ngāti Wāhiao people have used the geothermal heat for daily life for centuries. Here, you'll see people cooking their meals (hāngi) in steam vents and using the natural hot pools for bathing. It's a more intimate, less polished experience, offering a different kind of cultural connection.

Custom mattresses and pillows help you to get replenishing rest while travelling, and a comfortable temperature provided by air conditioning makes a huge difference. • Inside Banco National Park, Abidjan’s Tropical Forest Sanctuary

As you walk through the forest trails, you begin to realise just how biodiverse this protected environment is. Enormous ancient trees arch overhead, their roots coiling into the earth, making them look like nature's ancient sculptures. Smaller plant species cluster along the path edges, creating a beautiful collage of greens and textures that’s especially striking during the early morning hours.   Overall, Banco National Park shelters an impressive mix of flora and fauna, from rare hardwoods like Tieghemella heckelii to darting monkeys, colourful bird species, duikers, and African civets. And if you're wondering what a duiker is, it's the absolute cutest small, shy antelope. You'll often spot them moving gracefully and quietly through the undergrowth – unlike the fast monkeys.   Wildlife lovers and children will be especially charmed by the monkeys darting from branch to branch and birds weaving through the canopy. This open-air zoo is the star of the show, especially for visitors experiencing West African species for the first time. Here, the educational elements blend seamlessly with the joy of seeing wildlife up close.   You’ll also find a botanical garden, which is a highlight for plant lovers. It offers a gentle introduction to native flora and encourages young visitors to notice the smaller details of the forest. Finally, the little ones will appreciate the miniature train, which also adds a nice touch for those who don't feel like exploring the park solely on foot.   Here, wellness – though not loud or deliberate – is a natural part of the experience. A walk through Parc du Banco has a grounding effect, encouraging families to slow down, breathe deeply, and reconnect with one another away from all the screens and busy schedules. Many visitors describe feeling as though they've stepped into a completely different world, even though they're only minutes from the heart of Abidjan. It's precisely this effortless shift from urban energy to natural serenity that makes the park so alluring.

  • Worried About Travel Exhaustion? Here's A Guide to Planning Your Trip

Travel fatigue symptoms vary between different people, but many describe brain fog, grogginess and a feeling of being drained. While a lot of people would tell their friends and family they feel frazzled, it can also be described as malaise, a more medical term meaning a general lack of wellness and vitality. Once these symptoms begin to emerge, you might find you are less able to concentrate on things you normally find engaging, and you may experience a lack of motivation. Children might become emotionally unsettled, but happily, kids are generally very adaptable, and there are solutions to help reduce the impact of travel fatigue, such as sticking to familiar bedtime routines and bringing healthy snacks on your journey.

  • Queenstown Hill Summit Day Walk: A Must-Do Adventure

Getting there The trailhead for the hike is on Belfast Terrace at the edge of Queenstown. If you're driving, parking here is extremely limited, unless you're hitting the trail at dawn or have the parking gods smiling down on you.   But look, you're here for a walk, right? So a better bet is to start your walk in the city centre, which adds about 15 minutes each way.   Alternatively, Belfast Terrace is only 1.2 kilometres from Novotel Queenstown Lakeside, so you could easily start out from your hotel, adding about 20 minutes each way to the walk for extra bragging rights.   The stats: four fun facts about the Queenstown Hill Summit Walk Queenstown Hill is 907 metres high, with an elevation of 500 metres on this walk.   The trail is 4.2 kilometres long from Belfast Terrace - if you're starting out from the Novotel Queenstown Lakeside, it adds another 1.2 kilometres each way, bringing the total walk to a solid 6.6 kilometres.    Allow between two and three hours to complete the walk, starting from Belfast Terrace (but why not blow that time out with a panoramic picnic at the peak or the Basket of Dreams?).   The Māori name for Queenstown Hill is Te Tapu-nui, which translates to 'mountain of intense sacredness'.

  • Take a Gong Bath as Part of a Healing Wellness Break in France

The moulding and playing of gongs dates as far back as the Bronze Age. Some scholars believe they were an accidental by-product of early farming, when pans used to bake wheat became partially melted and found to make pleasant, resonant sounds when struck. That musical effect became vital to tribal culture, as heard in Indonesia's gamelan tradition, for example. Gongs were also integrated into rituals and ceremonies, the sound itself considered spiritual or even sacred. Tibetan Buddhists developed singing bowls on the same principle, playing at particular frequencies to aid deep meditation. These practices slowly spread from Asia to Africa to Europe, but their emergence as a form of alternative therapy is a relatively recent development. As sound healers and their clients will attest, though, a gong bath is more than just the latest health trend.

Located just a few kilometres from the legendary Chamonix region, where the mountains intersect at the border of France, Switzerland and Italy, the landscape around the Galliands lake offers classic walks for beginners. Various trails loop around the lake, offering views of Mont Blanc, Europe’s tallest mountain, without any steep climbs. Perfect for older family members or toddlers on wobbly legs. Plateau des Glières. With literally hundreds of kilometres of hiking and biking trails and a rolling pastoral landscape, the Plateau des Glières is a nature lover's paradise. In winter, it's popular with snowshoe enthusiasts, while in spring and summer, wildflowers and herb bushes border the paths. For experienced hikers, the three Têtes routes (Tête Noire, Tête Rond and Tête de l’Arpattaz), offer unforgettable lake and valley views. Le Semnoz. This plateau above the picturesque Alpine town of Annecy provides soft fjord-like views over Lake Annecy, and easy, well-maintained circuits. Crêt de l’Aigle and Crêt de Châtillon have high-altitude loops that are relatively easy. In summer, you may even meet herds of jingly-jangly cows.

  • 9 Muscat Beaches Worth Adding to Your Oman Itinerary

Stretching for several kilometres along the elegant Qurum district, this is the city’s most popular public beach.   By day, locals stroll the palm-lined promenade or stop for karak tea and brunch at seaside cafés. Families gather under umbrellas, kids chasing crabs in the sand, and paddleboarders gliding across crystal-clear water. As dusk falls, the beach turns peach-and-lavender under the setting sun, a view worth waiting for.   Best of all - it’s an easily accessible beach that’s lively and laid-back, especially near the cafés.

  • The Best Things to Do in Seoul with Kids: A Family Friendly Guide

Baseball is a huge deal in South Korea, so what better way to get into the local spirit than by attending a game? If you're wondering who to root for, Jamsil Stadium is home to the Doosan Bears and the LG Twins.   Even if you're not a sports fan, it's easy to get swept up in the constant cheering, the singing and dancing, and the cute mascots. The quirky stadium foods are out of this world, too. Adults will want to order the "One Shot Chicken," which is essentially a pint of beer topped with a bowl of fried chicken and fries.   In South Korea, baseball season usually runs from late March to September. You can typically purchase tickets at the stadium on game day or get them through the official stadium website in advance.    Tickets are surprisingly affordable, making this one of the best value things to do in Seoul. There's also a subway station at the stadium, so getting there is a breeze.

For families with older kids or motor-sport enthusiasts, it’s an unforgettable experience and a definite must-see.

  • Best Beaches in Visakhapatnam for Family-Friendly Fun

Conveniently located in the heart of Vizag, Ramakrishna Beach (aka RK Beach) is the most popular beach in Visakhapatnam. Like most Visakhapatnam beaches, the rough sea conditions can make swimming dangerous.   However, this is a popular spot to take leisurely strolls along the sand or the paved promenade, play in one of the many parks, eat street snacks from the food stalls, or just sit on the sand and listen to the crashing waves.    RK Beach is also home to excellent family-friendly attractions, like the Submarine Museum, Sea Harrier Museum, and Visakha Museum, perfect for when you need a break from the sand and sun. The VMRDA Park is located at the northern end of the beach, offering even more family fun, from playgrounds and walking paths to boating, skating, and sports facilities.   Pro tip: If you're looking for a family-friendly luxury resort on RK Beach, Novotel Visakhapatnam Varun Beach is the perfect pick.   This five-star resort offers modern rooms with panoramic ocean views, a huge infinity pool overlooking the Bay of Bengal, a fully-equipped gym and rooftop jogging track, a spa with wellness-focused treatments, loads of fun activities for kids and families, and five on-site bars and restaurants. You'll have everything you could possibly need for a relaxing vacation.

Two of the city's most famous landmarks – the Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque – are surprisingly child-friendly when approached with an open mind. The domes, mosaics, and towering minarets captivate children and teens as much as adults.   Fun tip: encourage kids to look for patterns and symbols, turning the visit into a game of discovery.   It’s also a good idea to visit early in the morning to avoid crowds. • Where to See Penguins in Tasmania: Lillico Beach & Beyond

The penguins of Lillico Beach are creatures of habit, and their (and the hundreds of adoring fans) daily routine is dictated by the rising and setting of the sun. They spend their days at sea, hunting for fish, and return to their burrows on the beach at dusk.   You can see them from September to March, which is their breeding season. It's a constant stream of teeny adults coming and going from the beach to feed their fluffball babies. The peak of the season is from December to February, when the chicks are starting to fledge.   The nightly parade usually starts just after sunset, so it’s a good idea to arrive at the penguin viewing platform at least half an hour beforehand to secure a good spot.   The number of penguins you’ll see will vary depending on the time of year and the weather conditions, but you can expect to see anywhere from a handful to a few hundred. And if you’re really lucky, you might even spot a few fluffy penguins waiting at the entrance of their burrows for their dinner.

  • Hamilton to Hobbiton: The Ultimate Family Day Out

If you’d rather let someone else take the wheel, and the logistics, there are plenty of options. Several operators run direct Hobbiton tours from Hamilton, bundling transport and entry into one easy package. It’s a great way to soak up the scenery without keeping one eye on the road.   Hobbiton Movie Set Tours offers daily return shuttles from central Hamilton, with convenient pickups near the i-SITE Visitor Centre and Hamilton Gardens. Prices hover around NZ$150 per adult and NZ$75 per child, including the two-hour guided tour and a complimentary drink at The Green Dragon Inn, a pint of Hobbit Southfarthing cider comes highly recommended.   If you’re travelling light, InterCity runs twice-daily buses between Hamilton and Matamata. The ride takes roughly an hour and fifteen minutes, costing between NZ$20 and NZ$30 each way. From Matamata’s town centre, it’s an easy fifteen-minute taxi or local shuttle ride to the Shire’s entrance. You’ll notice the rolling green hills long before you see the sign.   For something more bespoke, Cheeky Kiwi Travel and Backyard Tours Waikato both cater to small groups and families who want hotel pickup, flexible timing, and optional detours. Some itineraries pair Hobbiton with a stop at the Waitomo Glowworm Caves, creating a perfectly balanced day of fantasy and natural wonder — elves in the morning, bioluminescence in the afternoon.   If you’re staying overnight, many Hamilton hotels partner with local operators to coordinate pick-ups directly from reception, often including bonus perks like photo stops or discounted entry.
